The Garage

Found one of my old papers I wrote for Inky Trails....got a laugh out of the memories..

March 2007
The Garage
Spring time around here means clean up time. Clean out cages, put the manure out in the garden area for fertilizer, cut down some of the elderberry bushes that cover everything up, start to weed out around the berry bushes, trim dead branches off the trees, (which should have been done earlier), and Dear Hubby decided after 15 years, to clean out the garage area.
We haven't been able to use it for all the "good items" we have to save, old tires, boards, pallets, china toilets and tanks, lids, old pipes, everything seems to have a purpose to keep it, someone is always needing a "part" and know we keep a lot of junk around here.
His truck is piled high with items to go to the dump, and one area is piled with junk iron, brass, copper, etc. to take to the recycle area or salvage yard. When I come in from work, I am shocked to see two empty stalls to park the vehicles in, and one more to clean out...I am looking at a strange "object de art" hanging from a string in the stall I am supposed to use.
I asked Dear Hubby, "What is that yellow plastic oil bottle doing hanging from a string in the garage ?"
To which he replies "Well, when you drive in there, the bottle hits the windshield, that means don't go any farther or you will go through the garage !"
Now, how many women have someone make them something so special? Yes, he is one of a kind, and I am blessed...I just laugh every time I drive in the garage, and the bottle hits my windshield...I am reminded he cares....but does it mean me or the truck ?

Booger's Day

Always love to find some of my old writings....…

March 2009

Well, I woke up a happy puppy....got Mom up at 5:30AM, as usual, so I could go outside and do my morning rituals. I met the cats on the top step...OH BOY, I got to chase them out into the yard, what fun that is...they really run...wait until I learn to bark, they will hear me coming then. Back into the house, Wow, smells good. Mom is fixing breakfast.  I eat my kibbles, get a drink, then run into the room where Mom and Dad are, and I make a dive into my new soft bed. It is black, has a Milk bone on the corner. I like to chew on it a little bit. Mom finally gave me a bite of egg and toast. I was really good, I just sit and give her "that look"...you know, the starving dog one...yep, works every time. I have good manners, and she tells me what a good boy I am.  Finally, Dad has finished his coffee, I can hardly wait, we go outside and he turns me loose in the fenced chicken yard. What fun ! I chase a big, fluffy rooster...Wow...could he run, but I chased and chased, and when I caught up to him, that stupid bird just STOPPED ! Well, my nose went in his behind, and he SAT on me ! Good grief, I felt like a feather duster !  Dad laughed, thought I was funny...then I ran into the garden and found some Llama hair...boy, I grabbed it and just ran all over the garden, finally had to lay it down...then I dug in the dirt. Wowee,,, I can blow dust bubbles in the dirt ! I only sneezed once, and then we came back to the house. I got to chase the cats one more time. Dad said it was a wonder the old white cat with the crooked tail didn't stripe my nose. I have had a great day, sleeping, eating, going out and playing. I am so glad Mom and Dad adopted me. I just love it here at Itsy Bitsy Farm.

For The Love of Muriel

I am so glad my mother thought to save items I wrote....I found my treasure today....I made the paper in 1998, so will share it with you...

Touched by Victorian "baby book", Texas woman sought family

Editors Note:  the following is an article written by staff reporter for The Evansville Press Patricia Swann in Evansville, Indiana, on December 25, 1997, about one of our local resident's search for the family of a "precious treasure"--an eighty year old- plus baby book.

As soon as Gaynelle Callaway saw the robin's egg blue volume at the Cross Plains (Texas) Library's used book sale, "I just knew it was a precious book"
After she started to read it-a baby book more than 80 years old-she decided it was indeed "a precious treasure". Too precious to be kept by strangers. She felt it had to be returned to the family, whoever they might be.
It took her a telephone call to the Evansville Press, some local historical research and a call to Fort Worth , but today-on Christmas morning-a little boy will get to look at pictures and read about the grandmother who died two years before he was born.
"You can just tell how much this mother loved her baby", said Callaway, a nurse. "I cried all the time I was reading it."
The baby was Muriel Marjorie Van Dyke, born September 29,1911 to Roscoe and Mabel Van Dyke at the family home, 26 Jefferson Street, in Evansville.
In spidery, old- fashioned script Mabel Van Dyke faithfully recorded details of Muriel's early life, from her nurse-Miss Lilly Metz, paid $2 for the first day- to her first baby present- "from Papa, red rose buds.
Her first "outing" was at 4 weeks October 18. On front porch, held by Grandma Neale (a nurse) while Momma went driving.
Locks of her hair are in the book, with the notation: "when I was just a few days old, they robbed me of a lock that hung, down at the nape of my neck, and still I had so much, it will never be missed." By June, her bangs had been cut three times "and hair peeps below bonnet".

She had the usual round of childhood illnesses: tonsillitis in June of 1912, followed by an ear inflammation, "indigestion attack" in May 1913 and "grip" in January 1914.
The book details her many names. To father, she was 'darling". Grandma called her 'Child" and Grandpa "Little Pet". Great-grandpa called her "beauty" and her aunts referred to her as "angel". To her mother, she was just "Muriel"
Between two and three years old, she began to talk in sentences. Spotting an  electric car "standing by McCurdy's , (she said) "Momma, is that an itric ?"
Another time she said, "I got a headache. Give me a catterpillar".
At 3, Van Dyke wrote, "on election day, Mama reading a letter "Well, Papa isn't coming home". Muriel, "You lonesome little girl." Pause, Muriel, "Mama ! Let's get somebody else to live with us."
When Callaway,  a devout Christian, read of little Muriel saying, "I do not want to sit at Jesus' feet. I'd rather sit in his lap," she became convinced she was supposed to get the book back to family members.

For the Love of Muriel

We managed to bring home a box of papers Mom had saved over the years, lots of treasures....one was a story I wrote and the excitement of finding a family....more to add to it, just tired of typing...LOL

Water Level Marker

I am married to a comedian.....LOL....tonight, Marty and Benny went to the ballgame in Moran....Benny's old school..and so it became my job to lock up the chickens tonight....got my flashlight, and went out to lock them up....I noticed that one group had knocked over the water jug, so I took it out, pulled off the top, and started the water in it......and I had to bust out laughing...Benny had put a red and white bobbin in the jug, I guess to see where the water level is, and I got the giggles.....so I filled it up, and of course, dumped it over....had to start over, but got it filled, the feeder filled and they are ready to be let out in the morning....My whole life is a laugh with this man....he is my joy.......

Love is Laughter

Benny Is just sooooooo funny....Laughter every day,,,,,the funny songs he sings to me.....today was hilarious.....I had on a new T shirt...and the thin plastic ties that hold it on the coat hanger were just bugging me....so I stuck my hand inside my shirt and started just ripping them off and throwing them in the trash....He busted out laughing and told me I reminded him of his Granny...LOL..He said, "She would put her hand in her bosom and move it around and explain that she knew when she had left home that morning, she had two of them....and would do it several times...and then yell out....YES....here is one of them...and pull out a tiny white hanky,,,,and he would laugh and laugh....and then he told me how Granny would give people Smart Pills...he said they were dried up goat berries...he said some guy tried to eat two of them and explained they just tasted like crap...and she said...SEE..they are working...You are getting smarter....and more laugher....and then he tells me he used to put a dried goat berry or rabbit berry up his nose, and he and his cousins would blow them at each other...and he looks at me with his precious smile, and says, "Well, we did not have TV ya know......and then this house rings with laugher from both of us....yes, I know how blessed I am....from heart rocks to wild flowers, I am blessed.....

Bad Boy...Bad Boy...Whatcha gonna do.....

Today has been one of those ugly days.....It started early for me, about eight AM, and I got Buddy out of his dog kennel and started down the steps to chain him.....Hmmmmm.....what are those ice cream cone wrappers doing on the ground like that????......and then more problems...His dog house had been thrown into my huge water container that holds rain water....pots of flowers all dumped out....chairs overturned and thrown where they do not belong...the table moved across the yard and turned on its' side..the dog kennel outside had been filled with hay, so my coffee water is ruined....
..looked in the freezer to discover all of my ice cream cones but two were gone....I had bought two boxes..ten in each box....venison...gone...hamburger meat...gone...Benny's hot ketchup...gone....BBQ....gone. summer sausage and cheese...gone...and what else is gone, I have yet to discover....We went to get into my truck for church to only discover ice cream cones and ketchup smeared all over the windows , also all over Benny's truck.....we went on to church and came back in, and I called the Police to come and take a vandalism report.....the officer kept all the papers off the ice cream cones for fingerprints, and took pictures....I never touched the cones, just dropped them into the freezer, so hopefully we will get results off them....cannot figure out exactly who did this but I have one in mind....sadly, we do so much, for so many, and there are always a few bad apples in the bunch....but karma will come into play some day....somewhere.....some time....Benny had to wash the trucks as the acid will eat the paint.....cannot wait for a police report.....

Peas in the Pudding

Benny pulled a good one tonight....we had eaten dinner and he said he had to go lock up the chickens, and he would get some dessert later....I had some of the leftover bread pudding left, very small amount.....he hollered at me.....Why did you put peas in the pudding ? Told him I did not such thing....Well, he sAys, just come and look.....the pyrex dish was sitting on a decorated pot holder that has peas on it....I really got to laughing over this one......He was still laughing as he headed out the door to the chicken coop......

Remembering Jane....

I woke up in the middle of the night with our cousin, Jane on my mind....she has been gone for awhile , but I miss her...I felt closer to her than anyone in Benny's family...we both loved animals, she raised her horses and I raised my goats...we both loved coffee, and she always put a fresh pot on when we went to the old homeplace a Stephens County..I always loved her Christmas Cards, she drew them by hand, and they were always of horses....and one year she sent one in the mail to us and addressed it to "Dipsh** Callaway 's and I laughed till I cried..she thought it was hillarious as well...when she had a new foal, she called me and told me it was mine and she named it Derrier...LOL..when you visited her, it was not unusual to see a crow flying around in the kitchen and playing cards with you or talking, or a skunk pushing open a kitchen cabinet...and Jane would laugh...I miss her....but the memories are so vivid....She was a cancer survivor...she smoked a pipe and had to have part of her jaw and all the palate removed...she was a fighter...I would check on her and she would tell me to just wait till she put her prothesis in so I could understand her...then she told me she just could not eat peas anymore, she would put them in her mouth and they would fall out her nose....and we would both laugh till we cried...so many tears amoung the laugher...Love you, Jane

Little White Baby

I have played with a long haired little white shaggy dog all day...my story and I am sticking to it...LOL
Could not get the dogs to stop barking, here, and down at the old house...even the duck kept quacking..so I decided to go down in the pickup and see what I could see, and as I am backing out, there is a cute little long haired, white shaggy dog in the road.....I pulled back in and he came running to the truck...friendly little type...has a blue fabric collar on, I think......cannot really tell much in the dark....he went up on the porch and barked at the cat in the house, then came back down the steps, and I am thinking, what can I do to keep him from being run over tonight....so.........he is now in the big dog box...had no other choice but hopefully he will not dig out of it during the night, and tomorrow, I can find his Mom and Dad humans...so if you are missing a cute little white critter, give me a call......
Took white baby out for a walk, and he broke away...leash I have is old...so he took off and I was unable to go after him.....worried about him....saw him go with April as she pushed her baby in the stroller down the road....about thirty minutes later, my dogs were having a fit...white baby was back....he ran into my arms when he saw me on the porch....gotta find this baby's Momma.....LOL

Well, I have called everyone I know....seems like little white baby has been seen all over town....he had even been at the Feed Store a couple days....so I fear someone has cast him away....and he is such a cutie....I still have him in the dog box....we go for walks quite often, and he has had supper....sporting a new collar and leash now to replace the broken one.....will Just have to wait it out....I do not need another dog...and he does NOT like cats...LOL....and he has the most unusual color eyes....they are almost golden yellow...they even talked about his eyes at the feed store...he is really smart..even knows how to climb up into my truck and sit on the passenger seat....he heels perfectly...and freely gives kisses away.....

Flogging Rooster

I cannot keep a straight face..Benny came storming in the bedroom...asked me...."DO I LOOK LIKE A CHICKEN ?" LOL..seems the rooster got him out in the barnyard.....I just busted out laughing....told him he probably walked like a hen scratching out there and the rooster was confused....not to let the incident ruffle his feathers....what is so funny, is that the rooster NEVER bothers me.....just him........

Donkey Love

We went down to the barnyard to empty a bag of milo in the containers and I wanted to check for wild garlic growing on the back lots.....and as we walked, my donkey kept bumping me lightly in the butt with his head....he didn't stop until I turned around and he lifted his nose up for kisses....LOL...he is something else, from being so mistreated, to now be so loving toward me......Benny laughed as we walked along, said "You haven't lived until you live where a little donkey follows behind you all over the barnyard."..Yes, he is a special donkey....he has the softest nose..I could feel a few stickers in his nose, but he would not let me pull them out....he is a character....and as I got back in the truck, he threw a tantrum and started braying as loud as he could and kicking around the barnyard.....

The Spider

I wrote this years ago, but lost many of my stories when the blog I kept them at shut down and all was lost...so was grateful to find this one today...
The Spider...  (2006)
We went to a Rehab Dinner one night in the little town of Cottonwood. The women cook the best food, luscious pies and the money goes to the Rehab Center which helps those who have had stokes or any type of disability. They do so much good, and at no cost to those who cannot afford it. After we finished eating, it was time to go into the auditorium to listen to the local country bands, Each one has a specified amount of time that they play and sing, such wonderful music, so gifted, so talented, it is a blessing to sit and listen to them. While we were sitting there listening to a beautiful version of Danny Boy, a huge Granddaddy Longlegs spider fell from the ceiling onto Benny's hand, and then it came across onto me, and he flicked it off me, and it landed on the person to my right, ran across her skirt, and the next lady had a cane and she hollered, began to hit at the spider with her cane, the floor and also hitting the chair in front of her, and then it ran across the lady on the end seat, and she jumped up and began to wave her skirt as if she was fanning a fire, and I got down, I was laughing so hard the tears were rolling down my face. I said, “It is only a granddaddy longlegs, it won't hurt you.” to which she replied, “it is still a durn* (*nice version only) spider” and I laughed even harder. Country ways are always great and full of fun. I bet that spider could have won a marathon race.

The Counting Rooster

Benny has such a funny sense of humor......we have one rooster and four hens...tonight, the rooster was just having a fit....it was dark thirty, I walked down there but did not take a flashlight...met Benny after a few minutes coming from the other barn yard....told him the rooster was having a fit..he said he had locked them up for the night, so I walked back to the house...again, the rooster started having a fit, so Benny took a flashlight and went back down to see if somet...hing was in the cage or what was up...well, one of the ladies was not in the pen....so he looked around and found her sitting on the fence and he put her back in where she was supposed to be with the others...he came back to the house and I asked him what was wrong...."Well"....he laughed....."that is one smart rooster"..."did you know that he could count ?".....yes, laughter is always going on at my house.....we both laugh every time we look at each other...we have a rooster that can count.....

The Two Turkeys

Daughter Debra wrote this a long time ago.....LOL

cartoon goat clipart

The 2 turkeys "Christmas" and "Thanksgiving":

Now my mother, being an intelligent woman, decided to get 2 turkeys and name them "Thanksgiving" and "Christmas" for the day they would be eaten. She , of course, pampered these critters, calling them by name, petting and coddling them, feeding them to make them fat and whistle to make them run to her. Well....2 males in the same yard? Um , no. So showing his prowness, around November, 'Thanksgiving' killed 'Christmas'. Which meant we had to eat him for Thanksgiving, which for the other turkey, meant a reprieve. Only I (Debra) had to pluck the dead bird...not having any idea what I was doing, nor have I EVER plucked a bird. How hard could it be?
Oh...let me count the ways! First, I had no trouble with the smaller feathers, as they easily came out with a yank. But on the bigger feathers, I had to use a pair of pliers ....it was awful! Secondly, did you know there was stuff that leaked out the end of feathers?? GROSS! Especially for a teenager.
Needless to say, I will never have a 'traditional' Thanksgiving...From now on, I will buy turkey de-feathered and ready to cook.... Oh I forgot the rest of the story!....I bet you were asking yourself, "What ever happened to "Thanksgiving"? My mother became too attached to him to eat him, so ...he became a pet, and later on, she gave him to a friend so he could live out his days with other females....

Dear Lord, I Cooked the Snake

Old 11/03/08
Dear Lord, I Cooked the Snake !
...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has not been a good morning....I am still shaking and upset with myself. I came in from work, started out to feed the animals, backtracked, decided I needed to get a roast on to cook for supper tonight, turned on the skillet to braise the meat, went out to turn on the stove, and as I opened the door, I saw a movement.......I took a quick look, mice are invading our place, but it was a small snake. I do not even remember turning on the oven, I was looking for the snake catcher to rescue it, make a quick call to Senior Citizen's Center for Benny to get home immediately.......I found the snake catcher, grabbed a container to put it in, and as I opened the door to the oven, I realized I had turned it on and the snake was in a coiled position looking at me....Benny came in the door, I am crying, "I BAKED THE SNAKE !". He is now laughing at me as I pulled out the racks, reached in with the snake catcher, and tried to pick up it's head, he is saying "Just pick it up in the fattest part" at this point. I managed to hook it and he, the gentleman that he is, announces........"Let me get the door for you !" as I take it outside. I threw it onto the road to get a better look at it, think it was a rat snake, but I hate snakes. I am shaking all over at this point. I told Benny that I knew God has a great sense of humor and is laughing at me, Benny is getting in his truck, laughing, "I can't wait to get down there (Senior Citizen's) to tell them what your emergency was"....and he is still laughing at me as he backs out of the driveway. I have looked all over that oven inside, I cannot see where that snake got in , he was small in size, I am puzzled, but feel sad that I cooked him ! Maybe I should go back outside and find it and serve it to Benny on a nice layer of salad tonight for his supper. Ray, our neighbor, got a big kick out of watching me coming out of the house with the snake in tow, he told me I could have walked straighter....told me I zigzagged all over...NO DOUBT !

Bob's Funeral

Another funny one I found...years ago....we had lost a family member...
12/23/06
A Family's Farewell
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...
Well, we have attended two funerals in two days. Todays was rough. It was very cold, we are expecting snow/ice starting later tonight. The stories told today were so funny, I had to share them with you. It seems Bob and his buddy got a couple deer and brought them in, and Auntie wanted "her part" so Bob took over her part of the deer. When she unwrapped the package, it was two ears and the tail !!!! They said later on they had a family dinner. All were around the big table, and what a spread there was, when Auntie announced she had fixed a special dish for Bob. She brought out a covered dish and put it in front of him....she had boiled the tail and the ears !! There was a lot of laughter today. They said Bob had his own cathedral, the outdoors, and his choir was the birds that sang. And to top it off, they played his favorite song....Baby's got her blue jeans on.... and they laughed and rocked to the song. Yes, we have a strange family but the memories we share last for a life time .And I do believe, if we listen closely, we can hear Bob whisper,""ain't it nice?"

Old Cookbooks

Old Cookbooks

I have a love affair with old cookbooks. I can find myself lost
in the recipes. I read the old ads, remembering what it is like
to buy everything at one store, not the malls of today, but
little country stores, where you could buy coffee, tea, sugar,
flour, spices, and a pair of overalls to cover your rear. I remember
the two and three story ones from my childhood.

I went to the flea market yesterday and found a treasure,
an old cookbook, 1931, Dungannon Community Cook Book
from VA. I have really enjoyed looking over the old recipes,
love it when it reads to "use some lard the size of a hen's egg".

I read the recipes, remembering as the hog was butched, how
we scraped the hair off after it was immersed in a drum of boiling
water, how the head was saved to make head cheese, and the
rendering of the lard, and the love of fresh cracklins and cornbread.
Pages of memories open to me as I read them.

"Scald one-half pint of  sweet milk", and I remember the old cow,
Bessie. She loved to switch my face with her tail, and a time or
two, I got kicked in the ear. I remember grandpa squirting a stream
of milk towards the cats, as they meowed loudly, each wanting a
lick of milk.

"Cream butter till fluffy" and I can picture grandma sitting on a stool,
the old butter churn beside, up and down with the paddles, until the
tiny golden dots began to appear, and soon, there was sweet, churned
butter, and buttermilk to drink. The butter was put into wood butter molds
so it would look pretty. Memories, down memory lane I go.

"Stone the dates".....or break a tooth, reminds me of cleaning the beans,
and when we would string almost dry beans for leather britches, I can
remember the little spiders that would pop out and run across grandma's
floor, giving me shivers, and her laughing at me. Where has time gone?
How many years has grandma been gone now? Memories, still alive, remind
me of her, and if I close my eyes and breathe deep, I can smell her lilac
perfume. She is always close, as close as I breathe. Her love always remains
around me.

"Everything is level measure"....."For measuring, use a cup larger than
ordinary size such as a glass goblet". There aren't many of them around these
days, but I still have about a dozen ice tea goblets found at garage sales,
their big bowls and frosted grapes on the outsides. Old timey tea glasses.
I remember the homemade sun tea with fresh mint or fresh lemon slices.
I remember grandma standing on top of the hill, we lived at the bottom
of the hill, and she would wave the teapot back and forth, time to climb up
to the top of the hill and have tea and biscuits with grandma.

"Do not stop folding the egg whites in until the cake is at the oven door"
Priceless advice, "Get the cake in the oven at once and do not open the
oven door for 20 minutes, and do not jar the stove". Sage advice from
the years past speak to me. I delight in the writings, knowing the love
special ladies have passed down from years ago. How precious they seem
to me, caring, loving , great cooks, teaching, helping, measuring, and baking.

"Line pie tins with pastry"...how many of us still love the old cooking utensils
and pans of the past. Some of my old pie tins have names of by-gone
products embossed on them. I love the old things. Cooking from "scratch"
used to be a way of life. You had to grow your own food, have your own
gardens, grow your own livestock, or have a hunter in the family.

There is a recipe in the book from THE WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON,DC.
It is for Spaghetti Croquettes.....the recipe from Mrs. Herbert Hoover.
I laugh to myself, as I have saved recipes myself from Mrs. Jimmy Carter,
Hillary Clinton,(and even Ann Landers). They have to be good, look at
the prestige from these recipes, they were used in THE WHITE HOUSE !

"These pickles will never wither or become white or pithy". I read the
recipes for cucumbers with a smile. "Wash carefully without removing
the prickles". I definitely want a pickle with a prickle, and I remember
trying to grow gherkins, and what a disaster that was !

Who knew, a cook book could bring such a flood of memories. We cook
on our stoves, gas, butane, electric, wood, we are all kinswomen with
heart, cooking and sharing our recipes to the next generation, wanting
the best only for our friends and family.

And I end this little story with
my favorite quote.....'You can sprinkle it with sugar and bake it in the
oven with love, but a cow pie is still manure". My deceased Uncle
Arthur Leo acturally covered a cow pie with icing, and sent it to the
neighbor's daughter, Annie Papcun, on her birthday. Talk about a
feud ! My poor grandmother never could understand why Mrs. Papcun
threw it over the fence back at her. My mother still laughs about it.

Small town ....USA

Only in Small Town USA

Just a few miles from us is the little town of Cottonwood. It is a beautiful little town, great people live there, and lots of history. The fire department needed a new building for the fire trucks, and everyone pitched in to make their dream a reality. This little town really worked. They had everyone, people, businesses, who ever could or would, donate something to be auctioned off for a huge benefit. They sold tickets in freezing weather, they had bake sales, you name it, and finally the big night all the towns around had waited for....the prizes would be given away. They had a catering service do all the meals, catfish, chicken strips, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, ice tea, and at $6  a plate, there was standing room only. Then after we ate, we all went into the big room they have set up for musicals and other programs. There were so many tickets sold, they could not fit them into the drum, so one of the local firemen brought his patriotic red, white, and blue cement mixer up on stage and all the tickets were put into it and turned on to mix them up. Another drum held the ninety prizes to be given away, and a wonderful young marine made our night by calling out all the numbers. It was a joyous time, full of laughter, yells, and as each number was called, the name, number of the ticket, and gift, was posted on a huge piece of paper. There were at least 6 or 7 sheets by the time they were through. Only in little town USA could a guy named Lamb win the prize of  the  registered Long Horn cow. That brought all kinds of laugher. The name of the fire chief is so hard to pronounce, every time the prize he donated was called, it was referred to as the fire chief. He had at least six cooked briskets and his little daughter won one of them. There was a registered Boar goat given away, a youngster won that, a computer with children's games was won by an oldster like us, and everybody laughed. There were flashlights, radios, a set of new tires, oil changes, a beautiful tiled table, and for those who had little money, they donated four hours of handy man work, or four hours of back hoe work, a load of sand, cords of wood, a beautiful homemade quilt, pillows, a John Wayne Pocket Knife, four hours of fishing at Roland's fish tank, Trees were donated, to be planted, and won as prizes,Restraunts offered meals for four, Hair stylists offered haircuts as prizes, even the barber had haircuts (10) as a prize...and the best prize was the last....it was for all of us who bought tickets but did not win a prize...we were told we were encapsulted ....our tickets would be put in a box and sealed over with cement at the new fire station...who could wish for anything better than that !  I can tell everyone I have been covered in cement.  I just don't have a star !  But I can wish upon one, and ask God to bless every one of these wonderful firemen, to keep them safe when fighting all these fires, and keep them in the Palm of His Hand.

Update...the local newspaper stated that $22,223.00 was raised for the new fire station .

Foster's Dairy

I was reading through threads this morning and this one tickled my
funnybones: (seen on a milk truck)

Get High.......Drink Milk......Our Cows are on Grass !

I have laughed all morning. It made me think of Foster's Dairy. It is out
of town a little ways from us...God fearing, hard working, cow loving
people. They work so hard to keep the milk flowing. I love a good glass of
ice cold milk, cold buttermilk, and Purple Cows, { A purple cow is a
milkshake made with grape juice and vanilla ice cream, so frothy, so cold
and soooooo gooooood! } . It reminded me of Old Bessie, my  Grandpa's cow.
I can still see Grandpa sitting on the milking stool milking her, the cats
would circle around him, he would give a good squeeze and send a stream of
milk shooting through the air with dead accuracy....all over the cat's
face...and he would laugh. I would sit down to milk, and I got swatted
with the cow's tail, Old Bessie would aim her hoof and manage to get me
along the ear at times, or the milk would be spilled on the floor. I was
hopeless. However, I can milk goats without problem. Grandma would save
the thick cream as it rose to the top of the containers, and later in the
day, we would sit and churn butter, up and down, up and down, till the
golden flecks begin to appear, and soon they cling together to form that
beautiful yellow butter. Then we would put the butter into molds. Our
molds were not fancy, just plain little wood squares that held about a
pound, pack it in, push down the handle, and there was a square of butter
to be put in the refrigerator. It also reminds me of this little saying I
love:

If a black cow can eat green grass and give white milk that makes yellow
butter, you know God is in charge.

The years have come and gone, rules have changed, you can no longer go to
the dairy to buy your milk in your own container, we used to buy baby
calves to raise, many times they were so weak with the scours, they would
give them to you as they had a small chance of thriving. We used to have
bottles everywhere to fill with powdered milk formula for them, and hang
the bottles on the fence. They were hungry little buggers. The funny
memories that linger are a calf pushing against a bucket with a nipple on
it, and pushed Benny into the hot wire. They both got it. I laughed till I  cried. Memories,Memories, what a blessing the Lord gives us to recall the
happy times. Life is short. Enjoy each moment.
